Have you ever thought of traditional remembrance practices as outdated, disruptive, boring, or hard to believe? Do you partake in them? Well then, should they be preserved?
Alongside rapid globalisation and cultural amalgamation, remembrance practices have slowly been falling out of fashion. Yet, Singaporeans young and old, practitioners or non, think they are still worth preserving. So, is there a way for us to re-imbue remembrance practices with meaning? Could we better facilitate accessible and productive engagement between youth and existing customs?
Kindling is a community platform that promotes the preservation of and engagement with family heritage. Inspired by the traditional Chinese ritual of joss paper burning, users thoughtfully curate memorabilia from their everyday lives and turn them into digital joss offerings – each embodying a family memory, secret recipe, or a piece of family history for others to browse, learn from, and remember together.
